Education for a better future? Theory, practice, and social justice
An online colloquium for doctoral and early career researchers organized by the International Network of Philosophers of Education.
Education, particularly education tied to issues of social justice, is often charged with the responsibility of creating a better future, one that is sensitive to historical injustices and responsive to present circumstances. This future-oriented account of education has been criticised for potentially instrumentalising the complex work of educators. Yet, the immediacy of social injustices persist, from structural marginalisation and abuse, to climate breakdown and ecological collapse. What is education to do? Several questions arise in this context, including:
-
How can education respond to historical and contemporary injustices?
-
What opportunities and challenges exist for educators and students in responding to the past in the context of present circumstances?
-
What future(s), if any, should education aspire to? How can these be achieved?
-
What roles can educational theory and practice play in navigating these questions?
The International Network of Philosophers of Education (INPE) will host an online colloquium on Friday 18 August 2023 to explore these issues. The colloquium is aimed at doctoral and early career researchers in particular. As such, papers (15-20 mins each) will take the form of work-in progress presentations, with an emphasis on collegial feedback and conversation.
While this event is hosted by INPE, we are keen to welcome submissions that address the colloquium theme from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and approaches.
The colloquium is free of charge.
Delegates will receive a certificate of participation for their attendance.
